On its first ever humanitarian trip abroad, the team embarked on a 4-day trip to the blessed land of Shaam, expecting the worse at the Jordanian boarder due to recent events in and around Shaam. Alhamdullilah, by the mercy of Allah, Purple Bandage members passed through border control and entered AMMAN.
As the team headed towards ZARQA, 30minutes away from the capital AMMAN, the reality of being out in the path of ALLAH and being given the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate sunk in. Members described simultaneously feeling excitement, responsibility and gratitude.
They were greeted by huge smiles and enthusiasm upon entering the premises of ZADCOM organization. The distinct similarities between the ZADCOM Organisation And its group back home immediately endeared the team to the Organisation ,whom just like Purple Bandage, is also a diverse team of both men and ladies working together for the pleasure of ALLAH to better the lives of those less fortunate with the expectation of being granted JANNAH in return, in shaa Allah.
The 2 organizations have established a close bond over the past few years having worked together but this was the first time that theteams had met in person. ZADCOM, an organization based in ZARQA was started up by an EYGPTIAN muazzin in a local masjid together with a Jordanian businessman aswell as a Jordanian Doctor. The organization which was established around the same time as Purple Bandage in 2012, now takes care of around 150 orphans and 200 families a year. It provides monthly food hampers, blankets and heaters for winter months, and is involved in the rebuilding of homes and taking care of basic essentials required by families and orphans.
The Purple Bandage team assisted in the distribution of food hampers to 50 families on the 1st day and 100 hampers on the 2nd day before leaving the premises on both days to visit orphans and families in the refugee camps.
Upon visiting the first house,the team came across a family of 6. The father is completely blind and unable to work and the eldest son Yasser who is 20 years of age has a similar problem as his father, and requires laser treatment on his right eye and a major operation on his left eye. Alhamdullilah the PB team were able to fund the laser operation and are in the process of raising funds for the operation to the Yasser's left eye.
Some of the interesting cases that the team came across was a family of 12 living in a 2 bedroom house on the bottom floor of a 3 stores building. They use mattresses on a concrete floor and make do with a bathroom and kitchen in one. The height of the roof measures 1.65 meters .The 3rd floor of the building is occupied by an 80 year old lady experiencing the same living conditions. The structure of the building is too old and weak to be renovated.
Another heart-wrenching case was that of a family of 8 living in a 2 bedroom house with a roof made out of leaves and bamboo. The father accepted Islam and then went to work in the States as a truck driver. He now suffers from excruciating back aches and as a result he cannot work . The mother is the only bread winner in the house and earns a measly R50 a day to sustain a family of eight.
The highlight for members was Seeing the innocent smiles of the orphans and the families as they walked through the offices upon receiving the news that they have been adopted and will be receiving financial support for a year. The Hadith of NABI (SAW) “ if you want to soften your heart, pass your hands over the head of an orphan and feed the needy" echoed through the hearts of the team as they greeted the orphans.
Alhamdullilah through the mercy and blessings of Allah and the generous support from the Muslim community, Purple Bandage has managed to adopt 20 orphans and 8 families as well as cover the bill for thelaser operation.
‘Certainly there wasn’t a better feeling than sitting and talking to the orphans knowing that we are able to make a difference in their lives. We Insha Allah hope to continue with these efforts and adopt many more families and orphans during the course of the year as well as keep it as an ongoing project for the years to come,’ expressed Mohammed Ravat, AMEER of Purple Bandage.
